Avoiding clogged gutters comes high on the priority list for homeowners all over the country at this time of year. Many tens of thousands of homeowners will have completed or are procrastinating about the gutter clearing job while watching the leaves fall on the surrounding trees with a nagging feeling.

Keeping the gutters clear is an essential task to help prevent clogging, overflowing and then inevitable damage once water begins to leak inside the roofing. When this happens, damage to roof joists and timbers, plasterwork and interior décor can quickly follow if left.

Before you engage a handyman or climb your ladders to clear your gutters this year, why not think about a longer-term solution? Permaroof Peterborough have the answer to clogged gutters – talk to us.

Innovative product for preventing clogged gutters

Permaroof Peterborough know a thing or two about flat roofing and understand how tiresome gutter clearing can be for homeowners every year. Clogged guttering is among one of the most common causes of roof leaks in Portsmouth. Over the years we have attended countless homes suffering with a leaking roof in the house or garage caused by overflowing gutters and blocked downpipes. This can also cause external drains to overflow, which can lead to further damage in the home, external buildings, patios and gardens.

As roofing specialists in Portsmouth and the surrounding areas for many years, we know that local homeowners need a better solution to prevent these common problems. Talk to us about one of the simplest, most innovative products and let us install the Gutterbrush for you.

What is a Gutterbrush?

The Gutterbrush product is designed to prevent leaves and other debris from entering the gutter. A little like a bottle brush in design, the Gutterbrush is installed into the gutter and securely fixed at each end.

Once installed in the gutters, the brush fills the space with polypropylene filaments, which are wound around a central, stainless steel core. The filaments sit proud of the gutter and block entry to anything other than water and the smallest debris to keep free flow down the entire gutter system. Leaves and other large debris either sit trapped in the filaments or are blown away in the wind.

Book your free gutter survey today at Permaroof Peterborough

If you’ve had enough of tackling your gutters every single year, then give us a call today to see if we can take away the pain of clogged gutters. Book your free gutter survey in Peterborough and the surrounding areas and let us help with a simple, innovative product professionally fitted and guaranteed.

Traditional flat roof coverings can be susceptible to degradation during the hot temperatures of the summer months. Materials such as felt, for example, can develop bubbles in heat which can then crack as the temperatures drop and let in water. When winter comes and this water freezes, it then expands and adds to the likelihood of further, more permanent damage to roof timbers and flat roof decks. Once the timbers become affected, the cost of a roof repair can escalate, and it is always better to try to prevent leaks than have them repaired for this reason.

Although winter is still a way off, now is the time to check if your roofing needs attention. Giving yourself plenty of time to organise any flat roof repairs, or if necessary, a roof replacement is always a good idea.

Carry out a visual inspection of the flat roof

Making a visual inspection of the flat roof is something you should be doing regularly, particularly following a spell of bad weather, exceptionally hot weather or a storm. Take an elevated position and look down on the flat roof if you can. Some of the most common signs are:

Ponding – we’ve talked about ponding before and how bad a sign it can be for your flat roof. Look for puddles or ponds of water left on the roof after rain. This may signal damage in the roof deck.

Tears or rips – sometimes, especially if debris is blown onto the roof during a storm, damage to the membrane or felt can be visible. Look for tears, rips or holes.

Bubbles – these typically form on felt and asphalt type roofing installations. Bubbles should be addressed quickly before they crack.

Check the roof from inside the building

Inspect the building from the inside, paying extra attention to:

Ceiling

Roof and rafters

Top of the walls in the corners

Around windows

Look for signs of damp, mould or mildew spots. There may also be a damp smell if there is a leak or you may see wet droplets on the floor. Check the goods inside for signs of damp too.

What to do if you think you need a roof repair or replacement

If you find any signs that you may have an issue with your flat roof, it is important to address it fast to avoid any further damage. Permaroof Peterborough offer a range of roofing services in Peterborough and the surrounding areas. We can help you with all your flat roofing needs, whether you need a simple repair or a complete roofing replacement. We also provide materials warranties and insurance-backed workmanship guarantees for your peace of mind.

Talk to us and we’ll carry out a free, no-obligation survey to determine what’s going on with your roof. We’ll give you an honest assessment and talk you through your options.

Liquid rubber is growing in popularity across Peterborough for flat roofing. It offers an alternative to roofing membrane and is ideal for roofs with awkward shapes where membrane can’t easily be fitted. Liquid PU is applied wet to a variety of surfaces and when cured, delivers a high-quality, watertight finish. However, the thing to remember about this revolutionary system is that it also has a number of other uses too.

Permaroof Peterborough works with homeowners across the region, and our liquid PU services are taking off for a wide range of projects. Take a look at some of the most popular uses in a domestic setting.

Flat roofing

One of the most common uses for a Liquid Rubber system is for a flat roof. It is common to be used for a concrete garage or extension roof with extrusions. One of the main reasons for its rise in popularity is that is offers a completely waterproof and UV resistant finish over many different surfaces, making it suitable for effectively covering old materials.

Liquid rubber also remains highly durable and flexible over its long life expectancy and can contribute to a higher performance from most flat roofing.

Anti-slip surfacing

Do you have an area of your home which you are concerned about posing a slip risk? There are many hazards in a domestic setting and liquid systems can be used to create an effective anti-slip surface. Some of the most common requests for anti-slip surfaces in Peterborough, we’ve found include:

Garden steps

Paths or steppingstones

Pool areas

Patio areas

Areas surrounding fish ponds

Car parking zones

Wheelchair ramps

Other uses for liquid rubber in Peterborough

Permaroof Peterborough can offer liquid waterproofing services for a range of applications. Whether you are looking for a different approach to waterproofing metal garden buildings, concrete tanks or protecting ornamental garden features from corrosion, liquid rubber could be the system you need.

Green roofing systems need a robust, high-performance base layer to ensure a completely watertight seal. Liquid rubber is perfect for green roofs, sealing and protecting the roof deck for the long-term and allowing the green roof above to flourish.

Talk to Permaroof Peterborough today about your domestic projects and let us guide you through your options with liquid rubber. Book your no-obligation survey today or visit our liquid waterproofing page now to find out more.

The issue of ponding can be bad news for your flat roof and is the first sign that the roof needs attention – fast. Ponding occurs after a spell of rain and looks exactly as it sounds – ponds of water appear across the surface of the flat roof, and sometimes remain there up to 48 hours later.

What does ponding on a flat roof look like?

If your roof looks like it has ponds on it after a heavy downpour, it is likely that there is an issue with drainage. Another sign is circles of algae or dirt on the surface of the flat roof, indicating that ponding is occurring.

Ponding can also indicate that the structure of the roof deck itself is affected, as sagging of the roof structure creates an uneven surface that allows water to pool. Poor flat roof design is also a contributory factor to ponding. The roof deck should be designed to have an accurate slope to enable water to drain away effectively.

Whatever the cause, ponding issues should be addressed quickly after discovery, as ignoring such problems can lead to water ingress and subsequent leaking, which can cause expensive damage to both the remaining flat roof and the interior of the building. Ponding water can grow more serious if left, and the additional pressure a pond or pool of water creates can force water through the tiniest holes or tears in the flat roof materials. In the worst-case scenario, additional weight caused by a water pond can cause the roof deck to collapse. Ponding water can weigh up to 5lbs per square foot of roof deck! Therefore, it is critical to realise that ponding is a problem that cannot be ignored.

What you can do to address ponding on your flat roof

The first thing to do is to check the gutters all around the flat roof. Gutters and downpipes are the primary source of drainage across the roof. Make sure all are clear of debris, and check that there are enough drainage points. If the roofing material is felt, there is a good chance that it is reaching the end of its lifecycle, and it should be replaced. Felt is a traditional roof covering that is fast becoming outdated, as the latest single-ply membranes have a far superior lifespan. Spending a little more on a product such as EPDM membrane, for example, will pay off significantly in the long term.

More than half of the country’s homeowners will be planning DIY projects this year, according to recent industry figures. Although there are many talented DIYers out there, there are some projects that even the most experienced should think carefully about before tackling. One of these is DIY roofing.

DIY roofing requires a specific set of skills to do well. Once you factor into the project the system reliability, safety and insurance cover, it begins to become clear why there are more reasons than capability that should make you think twice – here’s why…

Roofing system reliability with a DIY installation

Many modern roofing systems, such as EPDM for example, rely on a quality installation. This can ensure that the system performs to its best expectations over its lifespan. EPDM systems have a life expectancy of more than 50 years, so you really need the installation to be of an extremely high quality to realise these benefits.

Some incorrectly installed roofing systems will fail quickly and need to be removed and replaced. This can result in wasted materials and money down the drain. Bringing in a professional roofer can often prove to be more cost-effective in the long run.

It is also worth remembering that often, materials manufacturer warranties can be invalidated if not installed by a certified professional installer.

Safety first

One of the most common DIY accidents involves a fall from a ladder. Any major roofing project will involve working at height, even on a single-storey extension. If you aren’t confident working at height, it is important that you call in a reliable professional to install for you.

Sometimes, the experienced roofer can spot a potential issue that is unclear to the untrained eye. It could be a weakness in the roof deck that could mean it won’t hold your weight or a problem with your ladder or other safety equipment, a professional roofer will know what to look out for.

Professional roofing contractors will undertake many hours of safety training and have specialist safety equipment they use as standard practice. Equipment undergoes regular safety checks as a part of the business requirements and is replaced at the correct time. Many homeowners fall from their roofs because they simply don’t have the access or the knowledge about the right safety protocols to use when clearing gutters or repairing roofing.

Insurance cover for roofing

It is extremely unlikely that DIY roofing will be covered by standard home insurance. This means that if things go wrong with or during the installation, there could be a long, uncertain road ahead in terms of any claims.

As previously mentioned, many roofing systems come with long warranties that can be invalidated without professional installation. DIY roofing projects can and do fail if incorrectly installed and without proper cover, this can result in, in some cases, more than double the cost of the original planned project. This scenario can also apply to DIY roof repair work too, as some warranties will include a clause that prohibits repairs by any other than an authorised installer. It is worth checking your roofing warranties and guarantees before thinking about DIY.

Professional roofing businesses are required by law to have comprehensive insurances in place to cover workmanship and public liability. This protects both the installers and you, the homeowner, should anything go wrong with the installation during or after completion.

Here at Permaroof Peterborough we’ll always recommend a Firestone rubber flat roof, but for the majority of homeowners, having to consider roofing materials is not a key priority. However, choosing the right type can have significant impacts on both cost and replacement lifecycles. Going for the cheapest option may seem like the right choice in the short-term but different materials have varying life expectancies, which can cost a lot more in the long run.

Longevity of roofing materials

Slates and concrete have the longest life expectancy (up to 100 years) but are also the heaviest option, and it may not be possible to create your desired design without a high cost. Slates are notorious for being broken or even blown off in extremely high winds, so the long-term costs can be expensive.

Metal is less expensive than slate but has a shorter life span, with an estimate of 40-60 years. Metal roofs can be prone to punctures, tears and pooling of water, plus they can be unsuitable for some building types. You wouldn’t want to create a sauna effect in your home office during summer!

Asphalt shingles present a more stylish option than concrete or metal but have the shortest life expectancy at around 20 years. They are not suitable for areas with high water run-off or risk of moss, as this can cause the shingles to break off.

A traditional felt roof is the cheapest option but also carries the lowest life span. There is a higher risk of leaking, tears and pooling of water with a felt roof.

EPDM rubber carries a life expectancy of more than 50 years and is more robust than metal. It is fire and UV resistant and is a great option for roofs with high water run-off. It also represents a very cost-effective option.

How can I prolong the life of my EPDM rubber flat roof?

Buy a quality product

The old adage of ‘buy cheap, buy twice’ rings true here. Whilst it might be tempting to shave a few pounds off the price, buying a good quality, genuine EPDM membrane for your roof will ensure it lasts an age.

Proper installation

Making sure your EPDM membrane is applied correctly will mean your flat roof will be properly sealed and you avoid any leaks, gaps or breaks. Perfect for protection against the British weather! Although EPDM rubber is suitable for DIY installation, for the best results it is always best to use an approved, trained professional to install your roof.

Correct preparation

When discussing your roofing requirements with your installer, ensure you understand what is required to adequately prepare the area. An EPDM rubber flat roof can be overlaid on other roofing types as long as they are in good condition and prepared correctly. The roof is installed by applying adhesive to both the membrane material and the existing roof. The temperature needs to be above 5 degrees for installation.

As with any major purchase for the exterior of your home, when choosing a flat roof material there are a number of factors to take into account. Getting the right balance of longevity, cost and practicality is important to help avoid any costly mistakes. With an EPDM rubber flat roof, you have the peace of mind that the installation is expected to last for around 50 years, and increases the likelihood of never worrying about replacing your flat roof materials again.

Permaroof Peterborough’s sizzling summer offer will help prepare your guttering for the autumn and make clogged gutters a thing of the past. For all our EPDM roof installations this August, we’re giving away a free GutterBrush and we can’t wait for you to have yours.

Getting roofing checked and repaired makes sense during the summer. Leaving it too late can result in damage and emergency call outs, proving a costly oversight. We’ll come and assess your roofing systems and help you decide on the best course of action, whether you need a roof repair or a replacement.

Minimising damage from clogged gutters

Gutter clearing is a thankless task that many homeowners dread. Some prefer to pay for a professional to climb the ladders, which adds up year after year. If gutters aren’t kept clear, leaves and other small debris can easily build up and prevent rainwater from draining away through the gutters and downpipes. When this happens, and gutters overflow, it is easy to see how damage to roofing and the goods inside is caused.

The GutterBrush keeps gutters clear of leaves by blocking their path to the gutter. Like a bottle brush in appearance, the GutterBrush is a series of polyurethane bristles wound round a central stainless steel core. This fits in gutters and can be secured using wires at each end. The filaments sit above the gutter and prevent leaves and small debris from entering. Rainwater can pass easily through the filaments and drain away as usual.

Permaroof Peterborough have completed another EPDM garage flat roof on a new extension in Peterborough. We carried out the roof installation including covering a walkway. We were also asked to fit five skylights.

Firestone EPDM was the obvious choice for this garage roof

The client chose to go with Firestone EPDM as they wanted a maintenance free, long lasting solution that looked attractive and added curb-appeal.

EPDM is the most reliable and durable material solution for a flat roof. The first Firestone rubber EPDM roofs were laid in the US by Firestone in the 1980s and are still protecting these roofs today. Well known buildings with EPDM rubber roofing include Honda factories, McLaren, CocaCola, Kraft, Nike, Burj al Arab, schools, shopping centres, railway stations, and many more hundreds of thousands of commercial and residential properties. Over 1.5 billion square metres of this material is installed worldwide.

Skylights for natural light

The client selected the skylights to add natural light to both the walkway and the garage. Because the membrane is easy to cut around any shape, the client was able to chose the skylights that they preferred, without any concerns about the suitability for the roofing material.

A flurry of flat roof garage extensions in Peterborough

Permaroof Peterborough have experienced a recent uplift in demand for EPDM garage roof installations in and around Peterborough, and our experienced team are happy to provide free quotes for any project – big or small. We guarantee a high standard of workmanship every time, with outstanding customer care.

Roofing news today has just reported fears and concerns relating to the entire industry of roofing and Brexit. But while this seems to be hitting the industry in general very hard, we’re delighted to say that we are busier than ever since our partnership with Permaroof.

In the news article released on 2nd May (read it here), they quoted MRA Research which showed that: “Almost half of the suppliers interviewed (49%) think Brexit will be either bad or very bad for the UK as a country, while 27% think the effect on the UK will be good or very good. Nearly one in five (18%) think it will have no impact. Many respondents commented separately that, although there may be a slight dip in the short term as a result of leaving, they thought there would be less of a negative impact in the longer term.”

With Permaroof themselves unaffected by Brexit, whatever the outcome, and more and more Peterborough customers approaching us for quotes to fit, replace or repair their roofs, we will continue to offer the same level of service to all our customers – whatever the final Brexit outcome.

A recap of our Peterborough Roofing Services

From flat roofing using Firestone Rubbercover to gutters, fascias and liquid waterproofing we’re pleased to offer free, no obligation quotes in and around Peterborough. All our work is covered by insurance backed guarantees and we’re fully vetted and accredited.
